If you can’t uncouple the car (connection locked and shielded with magic perhaps, or bad guys in the cars ahead and behind), but you absolutely need to get off, depending on the size (and therefore weight) of the train, it may slow down enough going around curves or through mountain passes to be able to safely jump. It seems they’re already in the last car (which might explain the lack of side doors on the car they were in), so there’s a decent chance no one will see them.

On the other hand, if you intend to take control of the engine… or to confront another passenger directly, and you figure he’s watching for an approach through the doors between the cars…

I still think uncoupling the cars (he could burn or melt the connections between cars with magic) is the best idea. Let friction do the rest.
